I
hear voices!
SOFs
sound is also very good, ambient noise and voices have the effect
of truly expanding the on-screen atmosphere and giving it that
much more depth. From the rumblings of a huge water turbine
too the shouts and cry's for help of injured soldiers. It's
all very involving and realistic, thus matching the graphics
in the very same aspect. SOF also fully supports the like of
A3D and EAX, somewhat of an advantage in SOF where you can be
attacked from almost any direction at any time.
Its
only real downfall is in the music, some of which seems to be
almost midi quality and appears to be playing rather tacky world
war2 style themes a little too much. While the music does often
match the levels, it never seems to fully match the ambient
noises around and often sounds out of place. In fact we had
to turn some of the music off as it ended up getting just plain
annoying on some levels, a little more work could have been
done here. Thankfully this is not the case with any of the other
sound.
The
Verdict
Soldier
of Fortune (SOF) is an amazing game; it's so fun that you might
end up finding it very difficult to stop playing and could end
up in a SOF induced comer =). From the graphics right down to
the little sounds of limbs being blow clean off, everything
seems cleverly thought out and presented.
It
only fails with 60% of its music being utter rubbish and the
AI needing some more work to add a deeper sense of play and
involvement. Other than that, LOADS OF GUN TOUTING HIPPIE KILLING
FUN!
