Mark (Speedy3D):
From
playing the latest demo I can say myself that it's an amazing
game, however I couldn't help but think that once your actually
into it, some of the ship to ship comms can be a little to lengthy
and people may loose interest in such areas. Has this already
been addressed or is it staying the same?
Bernd
(EgoSoft):
Like
I said, the linear plot of X is just one side. You don't even
have to follow it at all if you don't like. Dialogues are only
part of the plot. Interactions with other ships during normal
gameplay are much quicker.
Comment
(Mark):
A
warning then, at the start of the demo/full game I suggest you
skip the initial conversation with the Alien traders, it'll
take a good 30minutes to get past it =)
Mark
(Speedy3D):
How
do you feel 'X' will fare against the likes of 'FreeSpace2'
and 'StarLancer'?
Bernd
(EgoSoft):
X-Beyond
the Frontier is very different from these games, unless you
want to play it like one of them. At the moment I don't see
many games that compete with X in the same arena. I'm sure there
will be more games of this kind coming up, but then again, this
genre is "deep" enough to allow many different games, which
would still be far from similar.
Mark
(Speedy3D):
Will
you be supporting any specific 3D Sound standards?
Bernd
(EgoSoft):
X
supports Direct Sound 3D and A3D. This gives hardware accelerated
3D positional sounds on more or less all modern (PCI) soundcards,
and software emulated 3D sound on older ISA cards. Support for
EAX doesn't make much sense for a game like X.
Comment
(Mark):
I
wasn't quite sure why he said, "Support for EAX doesn't make
much sense for a game like X". So why does A3D happen to be
supported in that case and why is it bad for 'X' as the game
is set in space which is on a surround sound plain? (I will
update when I know the answer).
Mark
(Speedy3D):
Will
there be an option for Software more or will we require a hardware
accelerator to play?
Bernd
(EgoSoft):
No
Software rendering. X requires a 3D accelerator, but works with
a wide range of different cards!
Mark
(Speedy3D):
If
you had to sell 'X' to the people reading this, what would you
say about it?
Bernd
(EgoSoft):
Have a look at the playable demo! :)
Mark
(Speedy3D):
Finally,
when do you envisage 'X' as arriving for the rest of the world?
Bernd
(EgoSoft):
In Europe September 17th is the release date for most countries.
In the US we have a different publisher, and we do not yet know
the exact day they plan to release it.
Mark
(Speedy3D):
Thank
you for your time Bernd.
Bernd
(EgoSoft):
Thank
you!

Bernd said, if you really want to see what all the fuss is about
then grab the demo and play it until you drop. Oh and try not
to be blinded by those oh so lovely solar flares =)
