The
GeForce has is very well known as an all around well performing
video card, its DVD performance is no exception. Armed with
its own hardware Motion Compression, it takes some of the heavy
DVD decoding load off of your CPU allowing smoother playback
and less stuttering on lower end machines. The DVD Image quality,
while exceptional on the GeForce, can be tweaked to look even
more vibrant. After all, that's the whole point of the DVD technology.
How
it all works
In software DVD Decoding, the digital video is processed through
a technology called Hardware Overlay. This hardware function
on the GeForce (and other recent video cards) allows the DVD
to be drawn on a new "layer" over the previous screen. In most
software decoders, this is done through a DirectX function,
DX Overlay. The new layer has its own set of onscreen settings,
separate from your desktop. This means that all of your gamma,
brightness, and contrast tweaking, will no longer apply to the
DVD movie being played.
