Now
Operation Flashpoint looks to be the jewel in Codemaster's crown
this year. Originally called Flashpoint 1985: Status Quo, Operation
Flashpoint could be the closest most us will ever get to real
war. It looks to be one of the most ambitious war simulations
to be currently in development. Set in 1985 at the height of
the Cold War you start the game as just another soldier in battle
against the Russians, beginning right at the bottom of the pile.
You must play your way through the different missions as part
of a team, shooting your way to victory. After progressing through
the ranks you will then take command of the mission, issuing
orders via radio to your squads and working out the team's strategies.
There will also be 'loner' missions where its just you vs. the
enemy and expect a whole heap of vehicles to drive and fly.
The
physics and warfare are very much based this side of reality
so expect no quake frag-fest with the 3D engine providing huge
IGI style levels filled with buildings, forests and those pesky
enemy soldiers. So a mixture of FPS and RTS it is then ... with
the key being the controls. For a game with so many different
elements learning how to control each one should be like child's
play. Definitely a game to watch out for and according to my
sources a demo should be out very soon. The completed game will
be ready for your purchase in May.
