Yamaha CRW2200E Review
posted: November 7, 2001 @ 6:07 EST by: ryan
Safe-Burn, Just-Link, Burn-Proof; what does it all mean? TweakMax tries to sort some of these technologies out, while taking a look at a 20X recorder from Yamaha, namely the CRW2200E. Here's a quote:
"Before the high speed CD-Recorders was released (12X and above) the actual time it took to create a CD was very simple to calculate. All you had to do was to divide the time of the content you were supposed to burn with the speed rating of the burner. As we know, this isn't the case today because of the different techniques used to reach high recording-speeds. This is exactly the case with CD-readers, which has used CAV, and P-CAV for quite some time. Yamaha was one of the first manufacturers to implement P-CAV into their burners. Since I personally think Z-CLV is unnecessary and requires extra Burn-Proof operations, P-CAV is probably what we will see more of in the future."

USB 1.1 CD-RW Drive
posted: November 5, 2001 @ 6:01 EST by: ryan
EverythingUSB has got a fresh Monday review http://www.everythingusb.com/hardware/index/Iomega_Predator_review.htm">up on a USB 1.1 CD-RW drive by the name of Predator. Here's a quote:
"A small but stagnant sector of the CD-RW industry has always been USB drives. Consumers didn't seem interested in USB 1.1 CD burners. With the introduction of USB 2.0, more companies have been developing drives, but USB 2.0 is costly. There is still a small market for portable, lower priced USB 1.1 drives like the Iomega Predator.""

AOpen AX4BS Mobo Review
posted: October 31, 2001 @ 6:30 EST by: ryan
Tweaker's Asylum just finished up with their review of the AOpen AX4BS (Intel i845) Motherboard. This motherboard was able to take our 1.5 GHz P4 up to an impressive 1.72 GHz. Here's a quote:
“One of the biggest concerns with using SDRAM, even running at 133 MHz, is can it keep up with the Intel P4? The Intel P4 processor uses a blazing fast 400 MHz FSB which ends up equating to 3200 MBs of throughput. When combining this with PC133 SDRAM, which has a throughput of just 1064 MBs, you can see where the “bottleneck” factor will come into play. In contrast, PC2100 DDR SDRAM would offer up 2100 MBs throughput putting it much closer to the P4’s level.”

Glaciator II Heatsink/Fan
posted: October 30, 2001 @ 6:38 EST by: ryan
www.voidyourwarranty.net just posted a new review of the Millennium Thermal Glaciator II heatsink/fan. This is a unit designed to provide good performance at a low noise level:
"Many PC users get tired of the drone of black label fans eventually, and using a low CFM fan on thin fin heatsinks usually means sacrificing a good bit of cooling power. The Glaciator series of heatsinks was designed for those people (like myself) who don't want to listen to a lot of noise while computing. Rather than a brute force approach with high CFM fans, Millenium Thermal arrived at a patented new design."

ECS K7S5A Mobo Review
posted: October 28, 2001 @ 8:43 EST by: ryan
ECS have produced a great socket A motherboard that can be found as cheap as AU$150 (or about US$60). While it's not the quickest board out on the market, the price and stability make it a hard motherboard to ignore. Techwatch AU has the review.
"We are finally starting to see DDR ram based motherboard solutions make an impact on the market. As the chipsets are evolving, the performance increase is starting to justify the now diminishing difference between SDR and DDR RAM prices. This ECS board is able to use both SDR and DDR RAM, making it a decent board for those wanting DDR performance one day, while still being able to use your old existing SDR RAM."
