Upgrading Watercooling
posted: November 15, 2001 @ 7:03 EST by: ryan
Since using 1/2" fittings and tubing seems to be the popular thing now with water coolers, www.voidyourwarranty.net decided to upgrade their H2O setup from 3/8" to 1/2":
"Why does anyone care about flow rate anyway? Well the true answer to this question is quite complicated and with many caveats, but the short answer is that with higher flow rates heat transfer from the water block to the water is improved. Since heat travels in repsonse to gradients, rapidly exchanging the water in the block means that the gradient remains large and the rate of heat transfer is fast."

Samsung 170T 17" LCD
posted: November 13, 2001 @ 6:24 EST by: ryan
If you are looking to buy a new LCD display, then Samsung’s line up should not be overlooked, especially if you are concerned with image quality and price. Samsung has saturated the LCD market with an excellent line-up of high quality solutions. RatedPC has posted a review of Samsung 170T 17" LCD TFT, a top notch choice for anyone looking to make the move to LCDs.
"Picture quality is where Samsung clearly surpasses other manufacturers. Even tough the general myth is that LCD screens are higher quality than CRTs, I would not trade my Sony Trinitron monitor with any LCD monitor, but the Samsung 170T has won me over. Since I put the new monitor up, I haven’t looked back at my Sony Trinitron. The image and text quality of the 170T exceeds of that from NEC MultiSync LCD1700M+. Whether in Windows or Linux, the text is super sharp and images are vibrant and vivid. Looking at the monitor at an angle does reduce the quality, but the screen is still viewable."

Creative Audigy Review
posted: November 10, 2001 @ 1:11 EST by: ryan
Overclockers Online have finally had the chance to take Creative's Audigy sound card for a test drive. The guys from O² ask themselves a couple of interesting questions ... Does the Audigy sound card offer a good replacement for peeps who own a Live! now? And is it worth buying as a first sound card? Quote:
"The IEEE1394 interface has many different (and easier?) names given by hardware manufacturers. While Apple calls it FireWire, which I think is the most popular name, Sony likes to call it iLink and now we have Creative naming it the SB1394. Jesus, isn't this becoming a little too complicated? Anyway, the SB1394 is Creative's solution to connect your IEEE1394 devices to your computer. The good thing is that Creative tries to test as much hardware as possible to check out if that device works with the SB1394 or not.
Wouldn't it be nice to use the SB1394 interface to connect your rigs together and share data or play LAN games @ 400 Mbps bandwith? Well guess what ... the SB Audigy allows you to do just that with their SB1394 interface. It supports up to 63 devices hooked up in a daisy chain. Doesn't that make you drool?"

Thermaltake Active Cooling Kit
posted: November 8, 2001 @ 6:54 EST by: ryan
OverclockedCafe has posted their review of Thermaltake's active cooling kit. Thermaltake changed the heat spreader a bit, and attached a 40mm fan, all in hopes of cooling your SDRAM or PC2100 DDR memory to help give you better performance. It will cool up to four memory slots, and it's very easy to install. It's another interesting product from Thermaltake.
"Installation was a snap. But be very careful, the frag tape is extraordinarily sticky, and once put on, doesn't come off intact, so get it right the first time, the kit comes with just enough tape for 1 application. Once the heat spreaders are positioned and stuck in place using the frag tape, 2 spring clips are applied, the instructions show alternating the sides that the long base side of the clips on either side of the RAM, but I found it to be a bit more secure putting both long sides on the orange heat spreader, remember your results may be different and I think either method is pretty secure. Don't rely just on the frag tape, use the clips, they maintain pressure on the heatspreaders insuring even contact across all the individual chips."
