Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 Review

posted: December 18, 2001 @ 6:52 EST by: ryan

Void your Warranty has just posted a review of Klipsch’s latest PC Speakers: The ProMedia 5.1. Quote:

DVD playback is where this system shines. StarWars: The Phantom Menace offers probably the best visuals and sounds than any other DVD out there. During many sequences, I felt that I was actually back in the theater. The center channel does wonders, handling the voices while the fronts take care of the main sound with the rears handling ambient sounds. The PM5.1's deliver in DVD quality. For those who never experienced a home theater setup, this will truly be an enjoyable experience."

P4X266A Chipset Review

posted: December 17, 2001 @ 3:06 EST by: ryan

T-Break has published their review of VIA's own retail board based on their newer P4X266A chipset. Here's a bit form the review:

"VIA must've wet some pants when they announced that they'll be producing motherboards. Seriously, you gotta give it to these guys- not only are they not afraid of chipzilla by producing chipsets not blessed by Intel, but then they go ahead an counter-sue them! Just last week, Intel dropped it's lawsuit on VIA's AMD chipsets giving them a "total" victory which only gives VIA more courage. Courage to produce chipsets like the P4X266 and its tweaked up version like the new P4X266A."

ProLink GeForce2 Ti

posted: December 17, 2001 @ 3:05 EST by: ryan

Overclockers Online has slapped up a second review in two days only for your reading pleasure, this time of the ProLink PixelView GeForce2 Ti. Quote:

"First of all, I have to say the layout is pretty basic. Everthing has been put together on a yellow-brown PCB based on a reference design. Oh yeah, I've seen many Ti cards with the exact same design. But hey, is that a bad thing? Well, it doesn't have to be. The GeForce2 Ti GPU is hiding itself behind the heatsink of course. What is there to say about that heatsink? Well, one thing that caught my eye is that it certainly is not an Orb-shaped heatsink. And it should be more than sufficient to cool down the GPU."

Samsung Yepp YP-30S

posted: December 17, 2001 @ 3:03 EST by: ryan

RatedPC has published a review of the Samsung Yepp YP-30S. This is the mp3 player sent from heaven for light travellers, measuring only 66mm in height and weighing only 34 grams. Quote:

"The YP-30S is all about cool design, and that is even reflected in the package that it comes in. In fact, it's not a package at all, but rather a cylinder that opens from the bottom. Now this may not be too important, but it is very effective way of marketing since it's bound to grab the attention of customers when they see it in the stores. To tell you the truth, at first I was not sure if this a mp3 player at all, because it looked more like a shrunken pager of some sort. Upon taking it out of the box, my excitement grew. What I was holding my hands was indeed a mp3 player; one of the smallest and coolest looking mp3 players that I had ever seen."

MSI K7T Turbo Mainboard

posted: December 17, 2001 @ 3:03 EST by: ryan

With the slew of DDR-ready motherboards and chipsets out on the market, the older KT133A chipsets have taken a back seat.
8balls hardware has posted up their take on the MSI K7T Turbo mainboard.

"The integrated sound is good for people who want to build a system with minimal components, maybe LAN partygoers, or OEM system builders. The AC97 sound is reasonable, and doesn't take up many CPU cycles, though better sound solutions can be implemented by installing a standalone soundcard instead. The USB PC2PC function is interesting, but ultimately useless for people who have a mini-LAN at home or at work. This function might only come in handy if you have two PCs, but only one network card, thus you can transfer data between the two PCs without much hassle."

Lian-Li PC65 USB Review

posted: December 17, 2001 @ 3:00 EST by: ryan

AcidHardware have just posted a review of the Lian-Li PC65 USB mid-tower case. This is the same as the critically acclaimed PC60, but with one main different. Here's a quote:

"The left hand side of the case features a very professional looking, factory installed glass window. It certainly looks a lot cleaner than some of the "do it yourself" windows and is great for people that are not too confident with power tools. The window is quite large, with dimensions of 11.5in x 13in. This allows people to see all the innards of your case and will give you great bragging rights, especially if you couple it with some sort of neon light kit. "

Artec Jungle I MP3 Player

posted: December 14, 2001 @ 6:26 EST by: ryan

NeoSeeker has posted their review of the revised edition of Artec's Jungle I portable MP3 player. Here's a bit:

"Artec Jungle-I MP3 player originated from Korea and they claim that it is the worlds slimmest MP3 Player. Artec Corporation is a new company and specialized in developer and manufacturer of mp3 player, digital hardware and software since 1999. When I opened Artec Jungle-I MP3 player's box, I was amazed to see this tiny little player that is exactly the same size as my credit card and is less than 1cm tall (8.7mm to be exact)."

Seagate Barracuda ATA-IV

posted: December 14, 2001 @ 6:25 EST by: ryan

SLCentral.com has posted a review on the Seagate Barracuda ATA-IV 60GB Hard Drive. Seagate has long since been a quality name in the hard drive industry. Here's a quote:

"Having been an IBM drive fan for the last 3 years or so, it was interesting to actually have a Seagate drive to test out. Will I be converted over? The drive I'm using to test is a 60 GB OEM model. The first thing that caught my eye is the drive construction. It's very solid and has a nice shiny finish to it. After inspecting the drive, I noticed that it indeed had internal padding to dampen the noise. After building a few computers, installing a hard drive wasn't really a big deal. My VP6 recognized the drive fine and I then proceeded to formatting and getting it ready for testing. After having it on for a bit, I noticed something I guess is a drawback to the drive being silent. The drive gets really hot, which might cause problems if you have a cramped case already. It ran considerably hotter than my IBM drives, but then it also ran a lot quieter... Now lets get down to some numbers."

Lian Li "VH" PC71 Case

posted: December 13, 2001 @ 6:51 EST by: ryan

Virtual-Hideout.Net has taken a look at the tricked-out kick-ass Lian Li PC71 for you today and it's not just your ordinary PC71 folks. Quote:

"When I took this case outta the box the first time and layed eyes on that logo....I had to sit down and just gaze at it. It was like such a proud moment. It was like one of my kids names on their. VH, something so close to me, laser etched on the case. A happy day indeed. The logo itself looks a little more white in the pics then it really is. It really is more of a grey/silver in this case. That being the "burnt" black anodizing produced by the laser making it an off grey/silver color. It's very sharp! Also happens to match the front buttons on the case perfectly....heh. The quality of the laser etch was perfect! So crisp without a single flaw I could see with the nekkid eye :o)"

Laserjet 1200 Review

posted: December 12, 2001 @ 6:57 EST by: ryan

NeoSeeker has posted their review of the Laserjet 1200. Here's a piece:

"The performance of the Laserjet 1200 is superb. Our standard test for monochrome laser printers includes printing a 30 page pdf document with graphics and text, and also a test of pure text printouts. The Laserjet 1200 managed to average almost exactly 15 pages per minute (14.64 ppm) on our tests, a feat that is even more impressive because normally our tests come out 1-2 pages BELOW the manufacturer's stated specs."

Soyo K7V Dragon Plus

posted: December 12, 2001 @ 6:56 EST by: ryan

SLCentral.com has posted a review of the Soyo K7V Dragon Plus motherboard. With today's motherboard companies competing against each other for the title of best, Soyo makes a bold mark with it's feature-rich Dragon-Plus. Here's a quote:

"Along with all this, this board is topped with a 10/100 Network controller courtesy of a Via chipset. The drivers for this aren't standard in Windows like some other network controllers but that's fine as long as you have the driver installation CD. The performance of the network controller is almost as good as those of Linksys or D-Link but it's not as fast. I've noticed slightly slower download times but similar upload speeds. None that is noticeable though."

"Maxtor is the old standard and a personal favorite around here. Based on our experiences with their drives, longevity and quality are pretty good. Even more importantly, the RMA service is fast and easy. When comparing Maxtor drives to those made by IBM and Seagate, you'll generally find the Maxtor drives less expensive, and slightly noisier."

Intel i845 Roundup

posted: December 12, 2001 @ 6:54 EST by: ryan

Intel does DDR. ViaHardware has http://www.viahardware.com/msi845ultra.shtm">posted up a review on the first of many Intel i845 DDR motherboards to hit the scene. The MSI 845 Ultra is feature rich and aims to please. Here is a snip:

"The CPU area is P4 standard and is located at the top of the motherboard. Mounting a heatsink on the board is simple and we encountered no problems with components on the board getting in the way of an installation. The Northbridge (or ICH) (pictured below) has a large heatsink + fan mount on it—easily one of the largest I’ve seen on a shipping motherboard. Whether this is a part which is getting particularly hot, or MSI is simply demonstrating a commitment to using quality parts, its an impressive-looking heatsink for the Northbridge of a motherboard."

Swiftech MCXC370 Review

posted: December 10, 2001 @ 7:04 EST by: ryan

FrostyTech has posted up a review of the Swiftech MCXC370 Copper Heatsink:

"The Swiftech MCXC370 is meant to be a mid-level cooler for the thongs of consumers who don't need something quite as large as the MCX462. In any case, this is an all new heatsink and one you'll definitively want to read about before getting. The only differences between the MCX370-0A and the MCXC370 have to do with the copper base. The first version of this heatsink was all aluminum, and this one has taken advantage of the copper base for a little extra 'oomph.'"

Globalwin CAF12 Card Cooler Review:

"Today we take a look at Globalwin's card cooler solution: the CAF12. This 120mm kit is all you need to cool half the components in your system quite effectively. Here's a quote:
The fan itself is made by Innovative, a relatively unheard-of manufacturer. However, this place made fans for Pentium Pro coolers way back when, and they still sell a lot of their models to several cooling businesses. It is, quite naturally, a dual ball bearing model with an estimated lifespan of 50,000 hours at 25C. This is more than enough for any user, as most enthusiasts will go through 3-4 systems before this fans gives out. How's that for quality? Weighing in at 310grams it isn't super light, and that's where the aforementioned bracket excels.

SiS 645 P4 DDR chipset

EXHardware has posted a review of the the SiS 645 Pentium 4 DDR chipset (yes it's DDR!) refererence board takes the spotlight along with a short sneak peek of the new Crucial PC2700 DDR memory module:

"The SiS 645 was designed to operate with the new breed of PC2700 DDR Memory which runs at 333MHz as opposed to the existing 266MHz frequency of PC2100 modules. We haven't seen any PC2700 modules in the market yet but it's a matter of time before the PC2700 comes to attention. For the test, we used a 256MB Crucial 333MHz 2.5ns Engineering Sample module. In order ro run at 333MHz, PC2700 modules make use of faster 6ns chips, in this case the ones used were from Micron Technologies, the parent company of Crucial which is rated at 6ns."
