CDI InWin Alaska Review

posted: February 26, 2001 @ 7:40 EST by: ryan

Virtual Hideout has posted up a review of the CDI InWin Alaska Cool-Case. Here's a quote:

"This is really a great case package made with excellent components by an experienced team over at ComputersDivine Inc. And the most exciting part is this is there first attempt at such a radical case and it's a very impressive package. I'm not at liberty to says if it's the worlds best, but I will say this: If you've been waiting to buy ,what in your eyes, is the world's best case package...Put this InWin Alaska case from CDI on your real short list! This case isn't for everyone, but if you're an overclocker, and want the ultimate in cooling, or you just want something that'll surely get you noticed....this may be the ticket!"

Don't look for multiplayer gaming in this box; it is all about a fantastic single player experience. You will undoubtedly get that, and even though there are plenty of missions and plenty of action, you will be left wanting more."

posted: February 26, 2001 @ 6:33 EST by: ryan

"Every once and a while someone comes up with a truly unique and useful product. Well CaseAce Products in California has come up with the product every LANer needs. It is called the GearGrip. Basically it's a device that goes around the body of your case, and is used for transporting it. It is fully adjustable and looks very nice when put on. CaseAce even put some thought about where your keyboard and mouse would need to go and included a pouch on the side of the GearGrip."

Abit KT7A RAID Review

posted: February 25, 2001 @ 9:04 EST by: ryan

PenStarSys has posted up their reivew of the infamous Abit KT7A RAID. It goes over why the chipset is significantly faster than the old, especially how the asynchronous bus on the original KT133 operates. Hope over and check this review out. Here is a quote:

"There are two reasons for the greatly increased performance of the KT133A chipset, and it all has to do with the chipset to processor bus. The KT133A now runs the processor bus speed at 133 MHz, which is in lock with the 133 MHz memory bus. The first obvious reason for the performance increase is the 33% increase in bus speed between the chipset and the processor. This means that not only is bandwidth increased, but also the number of instructions per second transferred over the bus are increased by 33%, making it much more efficient and robust. The second, and possibly more important, reason for the performance increase is the lowering of latency between the memory bus and the processor bus."

EverGreen Portable MP3/CD

posted: February 25, 2001 @ 9:19 EST by: ryan

AcidHardware have just posted their reviewof the EverGreen Portable MP3/CD Player:

"Mp3 stands for Mpeg 1 Layer-3 audio. It is one of the most common music file formats in use today. It is also widely traded over the Internet, and is renowned for its small file sizes and excellent quality. With regular audio CD's you can only fit around 74 minutes of audio onto one 650MB CD-R Disc. This limits the amount of tracks you can have on one CD and creates the problem of you having to make 3-4 CD's just to have a variety of your favourite songs. It also might prove to be a problem if you like to travel light and the extra cds bother you. A 650MB CD-R disc holds up to 170 4MB 128 kilobit mp3s compared to the basic CDDA redbook audio format's (normal audio cd) 13 tracks. Since conventional CD players are not capable of reading the mp3 format unless you convert it to CDDA. You are forced to stick with a miserly 13 4min tracks. Evergreen and a few others quickly realised this problem and came up with a solution, the Portable MP3/CD Player."

Mini Super-Orb and Volcano II

posted: February 25, 2001 @ 9:18 EST by: ryan

Overwear Online have posted a 4 page review of the Thermaltake Mini Super-Orb and Volcano II heatsink. Not only do these heatsinks look cool but they perform exceptionally well for the price. Snippet:

"Both the Mini Super-Orb and Volcano II (With the Thermal Pad) got exactly the same results at both Idle (46) and Full load (48) temperatures. Then once the Thermal Pad was removed off the Volcano II and the Thermal Grease was put on the temperatures were only 1 degrees cooler."

ThermalTake Cooler Shootout

posted: February 24, 2001 @ 9:00 EST by: ryan

Overclockers Online posted a small shootout featuring all the latest ThermalTake coolers: the Super Orb, the Mini Super Orb and the Volcano II. Snip:

"The new Mini Super Orb has exactly the same specs as the original Super Orb except that it is 4mm smaller than its precessor (only 65mm x 74 mm). But why make it smaller? Will a smaller heatsink result in worse cooling performance? Well, the reason why Tt made their Super Orb smaller, is because it should now fit the space limited motherboard like the Abit KT7s: the Mini Super Orb was born! Does it still have the same cooling power of the original Super Orb? Lets have a look."

Run Three HDDs at Once

posted: February 22, 2001 @ 6:41 EST by: ryan

PCroddin has posted an article on Trios which is basically a switch that allows you to have up to three hard drives totally independent of each other. This is great for multi-booting with different operating systems. Check out the blurb from the intro:

"Have you ever tried dual booting with different operating systems? If you have, then you probably have experienced some of the most aggravating work dealing with software. There seems to always be problems with compatibility between the different operating systems. The Romtec Trios is the answer to having multiple O/S's without the complications. You can have up to three different systems at the touch of a fingertip, but this simplification comes at a cost."

Rounded ATA Cables Review

posted: February 21, 2001 @ 10:02 EST by: ryan

Virtual Hideout has done a quickie write-up on CrazyPC's green rounded ATA66/100 cables. Here's a snip:

"With all today's peripherals devices comes lots of wires and tangles. Why would you need a rounded cable? Well as you know the stock cables don't offer much flexibility when it comes to bending them damn stock IDE cables. It just plain stressful to me ;-( Lol everything stresses me out but I would rather not talk about that. Where were we. Oooo yeah the cables. These cables make your life a lot easier when it comes time to reset that BIOS battery, maybe changing you multiplier setting, etc."

On Overclocking (Cooling)

posted: February 21, 2001 @ 8:44 EST by: ryan

Review-Zone has just published a new article called A-Z of Overclocking Part 2 (Cooling Solutions). Here's a clip:

"Daring as they are, overclockers some times go too far and end up having a lot of cooling on the wrong places. Which results in improper heat transfer and unsuccessful overclocking experiences (The road to hell is often paved with good intentions). Therefore giving the right cooling in a well-planned manner can really make your overclocking experience worthwhile. So let's see how most of us have done it successfully. So pull up those sweaters cause' it's time to turn on the ICE!"

Soyo KT133a Mobo Review

posted: February 21, 2001 @ 6:46 EST by: ryan

The Tech Zone has posted a review of Soyo's new KT133a motherboard, the K7VTA Pro. Here's a bit of what they have to say about it:

"One "odd" feature to mention in passing, is the boards "Voice Doctor", which is, as you may have surmised, a basic set of audio diagnostics. Boot the board up without a stick of memory, and you'll here a slightly accented voice say in English "Your CPU may have a problem". Not exactly overly informative there (there are more diagnostic phrases in it's vocabulary), but this is a nice feature nonetheless."

"Most of the tests are quite useful; however I have to question the usefulness of the i740 and i82557 tests. While it is likely impossible for AMI to put in specific tests for every type of graphics controller and ethernet chip if they were trying to cover popular devices they would have been better served to support ATI and nVidia for video and NE2000 and DEC Tulip for ethernet."
