Alice PC Review

posted: March 23, 2001 @ 5:39 EST by: ryan

T-Break has just posted their review of this ex-id level designer's debut game. Here's a bit:

"Mcgee had everything, a dark twisted plot and storyline and an engine to create the dark underworld he envisioned for Alice. All he needed was the right music score to underline the game. And who could be better than the ex Nine Inch Nails member Chris Vrenna- his style of music is perfect for the moody setting of Alice. Chimes, jingles and a dark heavy music adds a lot to the overall mood set in the game. The voice overs for Alice’s characters have also been done very well, with each voice blending perfectly with its character’s traits."

Samsung 40GB HD Review

posted: March 22, 2001 @ 6:34 EST by: ryan

Iamnotageek just finsihed up a review of the 40.8 GB Samsung SpinPoint SV20400. Here is a clip:

"I did not take any exact temperatures of the drive, but I thought it was important to mention that this drive seems to generate almost no heat even after defragmenting for 20 minutes. The drive remained cool to the touch, even with my case fans turned off. This is a very big plus to me, as there are already enough components in my PC generating unwanted heat."

Aopen 12x10x32x Review

posted: March 22, 2001 @ 6:33 EST by: ryan

NeoSeeker just posted their review of AOpen's 12X10X32X CDRW drive.. This is definitely one affordable 12X CDRW drive which seems to be reliable.. Here's a snippet:

"The AOpen CRW1232A is a 12x10x32x drive - the same speed as the Iomega ZipCD that we recently reviewed. One of the major differences between these two drives is that the AOpen drive uses Ricoh’s “JustLink” technology and the ZipCD makes use of Sanyo’s “BURN-Proof” technology. These technologies may have different names, but they share a common goal: to rid the CD-burning process of the revolting buffer-underrun."

MSI K7T RAID Review

posted: March 21, 2001 @ 5:59 EST by: ryan

VoidYourWarranty.net has just finished their review of the MSI K7T Turbo-RAID. Heres a clip from the review:

"The K7T-TURBO RAID's layout is pretty close to the standard KT133A motherboard layout. Some differences from the norm are the location of the ATX power connector and the awkward location of the RAID controller. Most motherboard manufactures will put the RAID controllers right next to the onboard ATA100, but MSI decided to separate the controllers and put them near the bottom of the board. One good thing about the layout is that most users shouldn't have problems with larger heat sink units, as most capacitors are pretty far from the socket. Another thing that might be dissapointing to some, would be the fact that there are only 2 fan headers."

17-inch CRT Monitor Awards

posted: March 20, 2001 @ 6:00 EST by: ryan

HardwareZone Awards 2000: 17-inch Flat Screen CRT Monitors. The nominations for this category include the following products: MAG InnoVision 768FD, Philips Brilliance 107T, Samsung SyncMaster 753DF, Sony FD-E200, and Viewsonic EF70. AND THE WINNER IS:

"The winner in the 17-inch flat-screen CRT monitor category is the Samsung SyncMaster 753DF. Though not a truly flat-screen monitor--an unobtrusive thick plate of glass help give the illusion of true flatness—the SyncMaster 753DF monitor performed almost as well as the much more expensive Sony FD-E200. Furthermore, it outperformed the Philips Brilliance 107T across almost all of the DiplayMate v.2.0 test patterns and screens. The reasonable price of S$399 and its good performance propelled the Samsung SyncMaster 753DF into the winner's circle."

Global Win WBK38 Review

posted: March 19, 2001 @ 8:37 EST by: ryan

Overclocked Cafe has finished their review of the Global Win WBK38 CPU cooler. It's a great cooler, carries the MONSTER Delta 60mm 38cfm fan:

"The HSF WILL require tools to install, at least a flathead screwdriver, which is something you need to be careful about while installing. There is a risk of "FUBAR"ing your motherboard. Let's talk about the clip. I would use extreme caution when installing this HSF, one slip of the screwdriver while installing it and you will not be booting your computer up anytime soon. I don't understand why a company would go through the trouble of designing a solid HSF, only to put the "it only cost us a nickel" clip on it. The phrase "consumer friendly" seems to have been forgotten."

Transend DDR Mobo Review

posted: March 18, 2001 @ 9:02 EST by: ryan

AthlonOC has posted up a review of the Transend TS-ALR4 DDR AMD mainboard. Here's a clip:

"Can you all remember back to EDO ram and when SDRAM first came out? SDRAM offered something like a 3% performance increase, while whimpy at the time, SDRAM matured over the months and now EDO is history. Well we can't just shove DDR under the rug now, we must give it time to mature, it is after all a new technology and with new technology comes a few bugs that will need to be straightened out."

SuperMicro SC-750A Review

posted: March 18, 2001 @ 3:15 EST by: ryan

Virtual Hideout has just posted another case review. This time, they've taken a look at probably the most well-known full tower case, the Supermicro SC750-A beast. Taster:

"Overall, the Supermicro SC750-A is a great fulltower case to start with, or to transfer your existing system into. It has a few minor flaws that can, for the most part, be fixed with minor modifying. It is also quite large and heavy, but this is typical of all fulltowers, so I cannot hold that against the case. Drive rails and front access are things which are subjective, and cannot be used in an objective evaluation. I've seen this case for around $135USD on the Net W/O shipping and handling. Expect your mileage to vary. This is a more than some other comparable fulltowers, but I consider the SC750-A to be of better quality and therefore worth more."
