Asus CUV4X-D Review
posted: April 20, 2001 @ 1:38 EDT by: ryan
ViaHardware just put up their review on the Asus CUV4X-D motherboard. This Asus motherboard is based on the VIA Apollo Pro A chipset and is designed to run dual Pentium 3 processors. Here is a snip:
"The problems did not occur when just one processor was used. I really have to question Asus’s implementation of the dual design for the Apollo Pro chipset. Maybe it was just my board, but a new bios and a few e-mails to Asus resulted in no fixes. Considering this boards market, you would think stability is one of the key things Asus would provide. In addition Asus has also come later to the market with this board, which should have bought them some time to get it right.

Blizzard 360 Case Review
posted: April 19, 2001 @ 6:05 EDT by: ryan
Overclocked Cafe posted their review of the FrozenCPU Blizzard 360 case.
"As components in your computer get bigger, badder, and faster, the one enemy that will continue to increasingly wreak more havoc is heat. On the same note, the more we begin to push things to be badder and faster, the more you have to deal with thermal management. One thing to help you defeat the heat is proper airflow and a well cooled case."

CD-RW & DVD in One
posted: April 18, 2001 @ 6:10 EDT by: ryan
NeoSeeker has posted up their review of the Samsung SM304 DVD/CDRW Combo Drive, capable of 4X/4X/24X & 4X DVD-ROM. Here's a quote:
"DVD/CD-RW drives are quickly becoming more prevalent; and for good reason, too. DVD is the new standard for removable data, and most new computers now come equipped with a DVD drive, however a CD burner is still necessary for users who want to be able to distribute large data files and to support the huge installed base of CD-ROM drives. A combination DVD and CD-RW drive like the SM-304 would seem to fit these needs easily in a single, easy to use package."

DigiDoc 5 Review
posted: April 17, 2001 @ 5:54 EDT by: ryan
IANAG DigiDoc 5 Review has posted up a review of the DigiDoc 5.
"Today's computers have become extremely powerful machines! Most people have 800+ MHz cpus with high end 3D cards. Now it can be easily said that without proper cooling those computers will crumble. To take care of the heat problem, many folks by massive heatsinks, thermal paste, and huge 120mm fans. On top of all that, some even venture to the realm of overclocking, adding even more heat to the system. But how can you be sure that your system is as cool as you'd like? Most of today's motherboards come with some type of thermal monitoring system, but how can we be sure its accurate? Enter the MacPower Digital Doc 5!"

PCStats has posted up a little article on picking the right PC for yourself. Here's a clip:
"Having the "right" PC does not mean having the "best" PC; it just means that you have a computer that is attributed to your personal PC lifestyle. Knowing your PC lifestyle is very important. Lots of money could be thrown away if you don’t recognize what you are going to be doing with your new computer. With that in mind we're going to try and guide you towards this goal by breaking down what hardware is best for you based on those three different PC lifestyles. We've randomly chosen several online computer retailers to help give you an idea of where to go should you want to pick up your parts online."

"Played a game of Quake 3 recently? Maybe you've mown down a few terrorists in Counter Strike? If this is the case you may have had the yearning for something more than just the 3D produced on your flat two dimensional monitor. Games like Quake 3 and Half Life give a great sense of perspective and depth but there is only so much you can do with pseudo 3D on a 2D monitor. This is where the fledgling 3D stereoscopic market was born."

Swiftech MC370-0A Review
posted: April 15, 2001 @ 7:43 EDT by: ryan
Virtual Hideout is back again today with yet another review! This time They've taken a look at Swiftech's latest heatsink+fan combo, the Swiftech MC370-0A HSF for Socket A/Socket 370:
"The package comes with everything you'll need. You'll receive the heastsink+fan unit itself, plus the Installation Manual, a pack of AOS Thermal Grease and also 4 little rubber feets for use with an Intel Socket 370 FCPGA chips. The two main things that caught my eye was the excellent instruction manual, which is non-existent in some of the heatsink+fan package out there. It clearly describes, with pictures, how to safely install and remove the MC370-0A, and also the nicely wrapped fan cables in woven mesh. Very professionally done here. Any cooling freak will tell you that the Delta Black Label fans are the only way to go if you're looking into extreme air-cooling. I'm not gonna argue with that, but Swiftech abviously has a slightly different opinion. While the Delta is one loud screeching mofo at 37CFM, the Papst is relatively quieter. Not very much at 33CFM, but instead of the irritating and annoying sound you get with the Delta, what you'll hear with the Papst is just a low-freq rumbling noise. That's a piece of German precision engineering for you there and something I appreciate. I believe you would too.... :O)."

Hercules 3D Prophet 4500
posted: April 14, 2001 @ 7:03 EDT by: ryan
Acidhardware.com has put the Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 on the grill. They determined its taste to be somewhat satisfying with its electrifying performance coupled with an ultra cheap price:
"PowerVR have designed their own similar variation of 3DFX's Hidden Surface Removal. This technology was implemented on the original Kyro and is called Tile-Based Rendering. Memory bandwidth is one of the biggest bottlenecks in graphics cards today and tile-based rendering effectively uses available memory bandwidth making it less of a bottleneck. What Tile-based rendering does is, instead of rendering every pixel whether it is visible or not, it only textures visible pixels. Groups of polygons are batched together (in "display lists") before being processed by 3D hardware. This allows the scene to be grouped into smaller 32x16 tiles which are then rendered independently. This in turn eliminates the need for frequent access to external memory."
