SiS Chipset Preview

posted: June 21, 2001 @ 9:35 EDT by: ryan

The Tech Zone takes a sneak peek inside the gargantuan powerhouse chipset maker, SiS! Wait a second? Isn't SiS the company who's all but dropped off the map, except for highly integrated low-end mainboards? Well, SiS's latest chipset offerings are highly integrated products, but it appears that SiS might be ready to enter the mainstream, with chipsets that offer both value and performance with DDR memory. Read their full preview over here.

DIY Fan Controller

posted: June 20, 2001 @ 3:35 EDT by: ryan

Hardware-Corner has posted a guide on doing your very own Fan Controller. Here's a snip

"Traditionally, the most common and popular way is to use rheostats, which are variable resistors that soak up the power before reaching the fan. That's fine, and they're very simple to install. But these are 'passive', which means the output can never be more than the input, in other words, it can only slow down the fans, can't speed it up. Which bring us to the subject of 'active' fan controllers."

The Dragon Orb 3 Review

posted: June 20, 2001 @ 3:32 EDT by: ryan

The Dragon Orb 3 is Thermaltake's new heavy weight heatsink, and IANAG has a review of it. It's got a whole lot of copper and a 7K RPM fan. If it is priced right this Orb could really take off:

"Most of you have probably seen that the Thermaltake is marketing the top part of the Dragon Orb 3 by itself as an upgrade for your current Orb. It is called the Storm Fan. The Storm fan is just an easy nice looking way to stick a 7000 RPM fan on your Orb. Sticking a 7K fan on any heatsink is obviously going to help out the performance. To see how much difference the increased copper makes in the Dragon Orb 3, I removed the fan inside the Mini Copper Orb and places the Storm Fan on top."

On The Matrox G550

posted: June 19, 2001 @ 9:23 EDT by: ryan

I Am Not A Geek posted a review of the technology Matrox has announced with the G550. Quote:

"HeadCasting lets you see the head of the person your talking to but seeing that head doesn't give you anymore information. If you can see someone with video you can see the facial expressions they make. If someone rolls their eyes you would have no way of knowing that with HeadCasting. HeadCasting may make facial expressions but those could only be based on what the person on the other end says not the actual look on their face. You also can't show something like a chart or a new product that you could through video conferencing."

Enermax EG651P-VE PSU

posted: June 18, 2001 @ 8:56 EDT by: ryan

Acidhardware has taken a look at the leviathan of power supply units, the Enermax EG651P-VE. Here's a clip:

"Enermax power supplies have fast become the PC enthusiast's choice for good, clean and reliable power. They offer dual fan configurations in a whole host of power output requirements. This particular power supply we're taking a look at today provides a massive 550W of juice. This is far more than your average PC user will ever need and is a bit of a luxury unless you're deciding to utilize some sort of peltier/watercooling combination or extremely heavy duty RAID array which would require this amount of power. This aside we'll attempt to determine if this unit is really a worthy purchase over the competitors or whether it's just more of the same with a higher output."

More Computex 2001

posted: June 18, 2001 @ 8:53 EDT by: ryan

HardwareZone has posted up their last thoughts on Computex 2001:

"The new ELSA Synergy 2000 is based on the NVIDIA Quadro2 EX graphics chipset that offers superb performance at an affordable price point for entry level professional graphics applications. The graphics board comes with 32MB of SDRAM memory with an AGP interface that supports up to 4x transfers. Embedded with a 350MHz RAMDAC for a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels at true 32-bit colors, the Synergy 2000 offers 350 million pixels/second of fill rate performance and a polygon rate at 20 million/second. Although its specifications pale in comparison with today's high-end gaming graphics card, what sets the Synergy 2000 apart from the rest is its exceptional driver support for professional graphics applications. Let's put it this way, no one uses a gaming card (e.g. a GeForce3) for AutoCAD or 3D Studio Max."

Swiftech MC-462 Review

posted: June 17, 2001 @ 11:30 EDT by: ryan

The Overclocker Cafe' has just finished up their review of the Swiftech MC-462, all 1.67 pounds of it! This is the end all, be all of coolers right now if money is no object. There is nothing better for air cooling. Here is a snip of our review.

"In terms of overall quality and performance you simply cannot beat this sink. Downside is that it is $80. But a high end heatsink will run you $40-$60 so you can always say, "since I'm spending X, I may as well go ahead and get the best." Remember that these results were obtained with the 53 CFM fan and that there is a 68 CFM Delta fan out there for this thing. I can only imagine what another 25% of airflow would do."

SiS DDR Chipset Preview

posted: June 15, 2001 @ 6:09 EDT by: ryan

T-Break posted up a look at the reference board from SiS for their new AMD/DDR chipset solution- the 735. Here's a bit from their preview:

"SiS has usually been known to produce extremely cheap and under-powered chipsets but with the 735, all this is about to change. They are now focusing on keeping the cost to minimal levels while revving up the performance to compete with the big boys. This can be seen by the fact that not only do we have Abit, but Asus, MSI and ECS are also in line to produce power boards based on the 735 chipset. It’s time to welcome SiS into the professional league."

IWill KD266 Review

posted: June 15, 2001 @ 6:07 EDT by: ryan

Overclockers Online have slapped up another mainboard review for your reading pleasure! This time they took the IWill KD266 Socket A board for a testdrive. Snip:

"A 133MHz FSB with the memory setting to fastest (CAS2, Ultra2) didn't appear to give us any problems as the system ran stable @ 7.5x133MHz (1000MHz). Because the KD266 sure has the looks and the options to be a true overclockers board, I wanted to push it to its limits. That limit appears to be a 150MHz FSB with all the BIOS setting set to max (CAS 2, Ultra2). With a multiplier of 7x, I could run my Duron 850 @ 1050 / 1.8v (7x150MHz). With our SDRAM set to CAS3, I managed to cruise along at 155MHz without any problems. Anything above that either didn't POST or was unstable during our 3DMark2k1 loops."

GlobalWin CAK38 Review

posted: June 15, 2001 @ 10:14 EDT by: ryan

OverclockedCafe posted a review of the all copper GlobalWin CAK38. Here's a clip:

"I did notice a couple of rough spots on the base, but they were off to the side, so I didn’t bother lapping (or smoothing) them down. Of course it comes with the infamous GlobalWin clip (for the love of god, improve your clip) that meets AMD specs, so it will apply a lot of pressure…Did I mention that this is a big, all copper cooler that is very heavy (see where I am going with this)? You need to use EXTREME caution when mounting this cooler, very wise to use a non-conductive shim, and it wouldn’t hurt to take your time while installing it."

On Multithreading

posted: June 15, 2001 @ 10:12 EDT by: ryan

SystemLogic.net has posted an article entitiled "Fundamentals Of Multithreading". The traditional out-of-order superscalar processor is showing diminishing returns when increasing the number of instructions a processor can crunch though each cycle. To combat this Intel, with their secretive Jackson Technology, and all other major chip designers, are adding on-chip multithreading capabilities to their processors.
