Hercules 3D Prophet 4500

posted: July 6, 2001 @ 5:09 EDT by: ryan

SystemLogic.net has done a review of the Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 64MB videocard. NVIDIA has long been king of the performance video card market, but taxes its population heavily. A rebellion is being launched by STMicro and the mercenary siliconsmith Hercules. Will they be able to stand up to the awesome power of NVIDIA's explosive Detonator squad?

Emperor: Battle For Dune

posted: July 5, 2001 @ 5:50 EDT by: ryan

T-Break has just finished up a review of Westwood's latest RTS. Here's a bit from the review:

"Almost a decade has passed since, and RTS fans waited in anticipation for some, if any, sequel to the legend- but nothing ever surfaced (the prior Dune 2000 was just a facelift on Dune 2). And then the bomb dropped late last year. Just before the release of another long awaited sequel, Red Alert 2, Westwood finally announced they were developing Emperor: Battle for Dune, but with a twist. E:BFD would be ditching the 2D view port for a new 3D engine built from ground up. Westwood said that they would once again redefine RTS gaming with E:BFD."

Epox EP-8KTA3+ Review

posted: July 4, 2001 @ 1:10 EDT by: ryan

PC Hardware posted a review of the AMD761 based motherboard Epox EP-8KTA3+. Take a quote:

"My colleagues over the PC Hardware Software Division are currently designing a benchmark running on PHP 4.0 and MySQL which should be able to measure a database server performance in the same conditions, platform independent and time accurate. I am not going to detail the benchmark procedure but I want to insist on the legitimate of Linux benchmarking. System administrators know that's very hard to choose between two servers because even if the time to complete a certain operation on one of them may be smaller that doesn't necessary mean that it's a worst box than the other one."

Inno3D GeForce 2 MX400

posted: July 3, 2001 @ 12:56 EDT by: ryan

PenStarSys has posted up their review of the Inno3D GeForce 2 MX400 video card. Here is a quote:

"More than a year ago nVidia took the low-end market by storm with the announcement and realease of the the GeForce2 MX. For the first time, a value product was able to provide great performance and features at a very low price and win the hearts of the hardcore gaming community. In fact, in the past, low-end graphics cards like those based on nVidia’s M64 and Vanta chips have always been the laughing stock of the graphics cards because of their relatively poor performance. But fortunately times change and ever since it’s introduction one year ago, nearly every graphics card manufacturer has a GeForce2 MX based product in his retail (and OEM) catalog. Last March nVidia decided to expand their MX family of GPU’s with the MX400 and MX200."

Value Video Card Roundup

posted: July 3, 2001 @ 12:54 EDT by: ryan

AcidHardware have just posted their 3-way value video card roundup. The roundup features the Hercules 3D Prophet MX400 32MB, Abit MX400 64MB and Hercules 3D Prophet 4500. Quote:

"We were able to run the 3DMark2001 benchmark but with D3D Software rather than Hardware. This is reflected by the low scores that you will see later on in the review. Currently, there are no games that use the new DirectX 8.0 capabilities but I am sure we will be seeing some that do in the near future. We hope that Microsoft addresses this problem as soon as possible."

Global Win CAK38 Review

posted: July 3, 2001 @ 12:52 EDT by: ryan

It's Global Win's latest Socket A cooler and their only all copper heatsink. It's also the heatsink that I have nick-named the copper finger bleeder, read IANAG's review and find out why.

"The CAK 38 has the absolute worst clip I have ever used. It is extremely painful to put on. As you can see in the picture instead of a flat surface to push down on it is just a thing piece of metal, which hurts like hell when you apply the pressure down on it that is needed to attach it. I was unable to push down on it hard enough without having to release because of the pain to attach it with my bare thumb. I was only able to do it after I wrapped my thumb in tape, and to get it off I put a small piece of foam between my thumb and the tape."

Antec EasyUSB Kit Review

posted: July 2, 2001 @ 9:34 EDT by: ryan

Need front USB ports but don't want to spend the cash on a FrontX? Mikhailtech has posted up a review of the Antec EasyUSB Kit:

"Installation is about as simple as it gets. There are 3 wires, two of which come together to make the third. This third wire hooks into the EasyUSB and goes in only one way (thanks to a guide pin; actually lack of a pin for that matter). The other two wires go into the extra USB header on your motherboard. This is where Antec's model differs from the FrontX port: it actually uses the other header on your mobo instead of wiring all the way to the back of the case. Anyway, on each of the two sets of wires there is a red one with a sticker marked "power". This one goes into .. you guessed it .. the power pins of the motherboard header."

Gigabyte GA-7DXR Review

posted: July 2, 2001 @ 9:33 EDT by: ryan

T-Break has published a review of Gigabyte's latest and greatest AMD 761/DDR board- the GA-7DXR featuring Creative audio onboard and IDE RAID. Here's a bit from the review:

"Inside the BIOS, this board offers the highest FSB speed settings that we've ever seen in a motherboard. You can adjust the FSB from your base speed all the way upto 250MHz in 1MHz increments! I don't think you can ask for anything more that that. As we mentioned earlier, this board also allows you to adjust the voltage of your AGP and RAM if you feel the need to be adventurous. Also the presence of four onboard fan-connectors gives you plenty of room to have a decent airflow within your system."

Iiyama i91A Monitor Review

posted: July 2, 2001 @ 9:29 EDT by: ryan

Maximum3d has posted up a review of the Iiyama i91A monitor, here's the token quote:

"During the sharpness tests, which consist of a grid of dots and lines, the Iiyama i91A showed very crisp, symmetrical dots, and finely defined lines. Moiré was not present in everyday viewing, but using the tests, they were found in all resolutions and all depth settings. Remember, these tests were designed to stress the monitor so that it would exhibit moiré. If you read the testing methodology, you would not be alarmed."

1.4 Ghz AYHJA Y T-Bird

posted: July 1, 2001 @ 4:43 EDT by: ryan

ChillBlast decided to flash some cash and get a 1.4 Ghz AYHJA Y T-Bird and see what all the fuss is about:

"Well, there has been a lot of attention paid to the AYHJA Y 1.4 Ghz CPUs with many reporting gains of over 1.6 Ghz. Now this is not the same percentage increase that the AXIA Y could reach, but it will get you going faster than AMD will officially allow before the end of the year, and for that reason bring it on!"

Maxx Overclocking has a review up on High Speed PC's new AGP AirLift. Here's a clip:

"Graphic cards have a processor too, so you're obviously going to need some cooling to get the peak performance out of your card. With that in their head, High Speed PC came out with the AGP AirLift. The idea behind this product is to remove the heat from behind your card, where most people wouldn't think about cooling."

Cool-View Window Kit

posted: June 28, 2001 @ 6:28 EDT by: ryan

Looking for a fairly easy and inexpensive way to make your case more extreme? Check out this Cool-View window kit complete with two 92mm blow holes. Here's a quote:

"This is the panel I cut for the window on my full tower AOPEN case. The Window Kit comes with instruction that are pretty common sense. Things like use window as a guide to line up the holes. It only took me about 5 or 6 minutes to cut out this rectangle with a jig saw, and drill the screw holes. This is much easier then cutting blow holes because as you can imagine cutting a rectangle is much easier then cutting a perfect circle. If you make a little mistake the the black trim should hide it well enough."

OMG Anachronox is great...

posted: June 27, 2001 @ 9:40 EDT by: ryan

I don't know about you but this game meets Deus Ex on all levels. After playing this game for a little while now here is my little rant on it:

This game couldn’t have come from the same ION storm that created Daikatana could it? Truth be told, after playing this game for a couple of days now I can safely say that I have been sucked into the world that is Anachronox. From the begging it is evident that this game has been brushed with the paint of a masterpiece. This game has a story line, which meets, if not exceeds that of Deus Ex but it is also full of gorgeous environments (who would have thought this was the quakeII engine?!

I took a risk in buying this game as there has been very little press coverage, and zero reviews as of now, however if you are into deep story lines, and intriguing sci-fi role playing action you owe it to yourself to pick up this game.

Buy it from amazon if you so please.
