Keyboard Roundup
posted: August 7, 2001 @ 9:32 EDT by: ryan
Is a keyboard a keyboard? If so, then why are there so many companies
making them? Why are some $20 and others $60? At G3D:Gaming In 3D, they've done a quick budget keyboard roundup featuring 5 keyboards. Check it out:
"I'm not here to enlighten you on why you need a good keyboard, because I know you know the reasons (comfort and key-feel being the primary two). I'm here to help you find which keyboard will give you what you want. Testing consists of build quality, key-feel, typing comfort, and gaming comfort (hand stationary at "W-A-D-S" keys). I've rounded up 5 popular keyboards, all of which can be had for under $20 US"

Dragon Orb 3 Review
posted: August 7, 2001 @ 9:24 EDT by: ryan
The Dragon Orb 3 is an interesting addition to the Orb line, with it's thick copper base and 7000 RPM 'heat sweeper', the Dragon Orb 3 is a sure winner (Thermaltake did it for the Gipper). A good, affordable option for anyone that wants a solid CPU cooler for their overclocked processor (or if they just want a new CPU cooler). OverclockedCafe has the review:
"Placing the fan over the actual heatsink area of the Dragon Orb 3 , instead of directly on top, seems to help move more heat away from the copper. Maybe due to less of a "dead air" space that can happen when the fan sits directly on top of the heatsink (of course, a 7000 RPM/38 cfm fan helps)."

Icemat Review
posted: August 6, 2001 @ 12:08 EDT by: ryan
GideonTech.com took a look at the Icemat, a mouse surface unlike any other. Snip:
"The easiest way to clean the Icemat is to use a mild glass cleaner. Don't stick it in the dishwasher, it will break. I used the unit to play a little Counter-Strike. I didn't get more kills or anything, but I did react a lot faster when using the Sniper Rifle. Not sure if that's a good thing, because I still got my ass shot dead. I did notice when you collect some small dust particles underneath your mouse, it creates a very horrid scratching noise on the Icemat. Cleaning the mouse does solve this issue."

Did WinXP get some crafty ideas from Mandrake. Sure does look like it. The column is a great read, and follows the same humurous format as past A Guru's World columns.

Big Cooler Shootout
posted: August 4, 2001 @ 1:08 EDT by: ryan
OČ has posted a new cooler shootout featuring a long list of heatsinks. Besides the Dragon Orb, the new Vantec CCD-6035D and the Thermalright SK6 we also included some unknown heatsinks and one aimed towards the silent pc's out there. Snip:
"The 6030D is the first of two new high performance Vantec heatsinks we're going to discuss today at OČ. This first one is completely made out of aluminum and has a 60mm x 60mm x 25mm 7000rpm fan (with fan grill) as stock fan. The 59mm x 60mm x 27mm alu heatsink has a kind of thin fin design with over 30 thin (1mm) fins. The 6030D measures 66mm x 63mm x 61mm in total which isn't that big at all. The retention clip is superb, you don't need a screwdriver or any other tool to mount it onto your CPU. That's just great! :) There's nothing more to say about this heatsink. Are these new (and improved?) Vantecs even beter than the older ones? Let the figures speak for themselves."

Agate Q-Drive Review
posted: August 4, 2001 @ 1:06 EDT by: ryan
DreddNews looked at a small capacity USB storage device, compatible with the PC and MAC. The reviewer doesn't have a whole lot of "good" things to say about the tiny $70 item. Here's a snip from the review:
"Good idea, bad execution...That pretty much sums up my experience with the new Q-Drive provided by CrazyPC for us to review. The unit is a small capacity storage device no bigger than a key fob. Supposedly you just plug it in and go according to company hype. This remains to be seen. We managed to get our hands on the 16mb version. But before we get down to ripping the manufacturer to shreds lets look at some supposed specs."

Antec SX635 Case Review
posted: August 2, 2001 @ 8:08 EDT by: ryan
VyW has another review up, this time of the Antec SX635 case. This is Antec's new performance series mid-tower with 350W PSU. Here is a quote:
"From the outside, the SX635 looks pretty much identical to the SX830 that many of our readers are familiar with already. The bezel has a built in floppy bay, and then 3 5.25" bays and 1 standard external 3.5" bay. The lower half of the bezel is dominated by the distinctive louvred design that all the SX series case have. The louvres not only look nice but also provide the intake fans with all of the fresh outside air that they need."

Tualatin 1.2GHz Review
posted: August 1, 2001 @ 11:16 EDT by: ryan
The Tualatin is Intel's new Pentium III processor based on the 0.13 micron manufacturing technology. With a smaller die, lower core voltage and a much friendlier packaging, the Tualatin currently offers up to 1.2GHz of processing power. HardwareZone posted up an article on how it compares with the Athlon and Pentium 4.
"The new Intel Tualatin is certainly going to be an interesting extension to Intel's Pentium III line of processors. With performance matching the Athlon, the Tualatin could very well give users a good alternative to using AMD's power hungry Athlon processor. With very low requirements for power (you can still use your old 250W ATX power supply unit) and low heat dissipation (a simple cooler should do the trick), the Tualatin is made for consumers seeking a quick and simple upgrade solution. The drawback is that users are required to change their current motherboard to accomodate the new Tualatin."

Samsung DVD-V1000 Review
posted: July 31, 2001 @ 7:55 EDT by: ryan
IANAG has posted a review of the Samsung DVD-V1000. DVD & VCR in one? Here's a taster:
"Another option in the DVD Setup menu worth looking at is something called Dynamic Compression. What it does it is constrains the dynamic range difference between the quietest and loudest passages of a DVD sound track. Basically it makes loud noises quieter and quieter noises louder. This is good if you are trying to watch a movie and someone in another room is trying to sleep. This way you won't have to keep turning it down when things are exploding and turning it back up when people are whispering."

Kyro II Speed Mod
posted: July 31, 2001 @ 7:50 EDT by: ryan
The guys over at ProCooling have put up a little article on modifying one's Kyro II based card for more speed. This is a definite fun read, almost gets me ready to take this GF3 and pelt it down:
"After playing around with this card for a while, I started tinkering with overclocking. I quickly learned that the core and the memory speed were locked together at 175/175. This seemed to be a pretty conservative setting. The chip doesn't run too hot, and the memory is spec'd for 5ns (200 mhz) operation. Time to overclock. The highest I was able to achieve was 185/185. Something's wrong!"

Apple iBook Review
posted: July 30, 2001 @ 7:46 EDT by: ryan
The new Apple iBook features a PowerPC G3 processor at 500MHz and it comes with all the features that you'll ever need. It is an excellent notebook to help you get started, especially for those of us that are less computer savvy. Instead of getting a full fledge PowerMac or iMac, one could consider an iBook instead as HardwareZone has the review.
"The new iBook comes chock full of features that you will ever need in a notebook. It easily puts some of those brand name Wintel notebook to shame. The iBook that was reviewed sports a PowerPC G3 running at a respectable 500MHz. It comes built-in with a single FireWire, 2 USB ports, a video out port, an AV connector, a 56K modem, a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet port and a 8X DVD ROM drive. It is also AirPort ready with a PC-Card slot built-in for an AirPort card as well. The antenna for the AirPort card is built into every iBook. Unfortunately it only has 64MB SDRAM although there are versions that comes standard with 128MB SDRAM."
