Swiftech MC-462BA HSF
posted: September 15, 2001 @ 7:50 EDT by: ryan
bluescreenofdeth has posted their review of the Swiftech MC-462BA HSF to include various 80mm fans, such as the Delta 80mm 'focused flow' fan. Here's a clip:
"A fairly obdvious winner here. The Swiftech MC-462BA with the Delta 80mm fan wins hands down, knocking a couple of degrees off the previous best idle or loaded temperatures. Despite this result, i'm still not totally convinced - let me assure you, the MC-462BA is a great heatsink, but i'd really expected a bit more, considering the high surface area and huge volume of air shifted by the 80mm Delta. Go for the Swifty if you've got plenty of spare cash around, but otherwise remember you're only actually gaining two or three degrees over somthing like the Vantec CCK-6035D or Hedgehog 294M."

Abit KG7-RAID Review
posted: September 14, 2001 @ 6:25 EDT by: ryan
O² has posted a new review taking a detailed look at one of the sweetest, baddest, coolest socketA motherboards available: the long awaited Abit KG7-RAID. Snip:
"The SMIII gives the KG7 a very big overclocking potential, offering all the adjustements and settings you could ask for. You can set the front side bus to any speed you like, as long as it is a value between 100 and 200MHz. Up to now, the highest speedsetting we managed to achieve was 175MHz. At 180MHz the board would post but not boot into Windows ... whether this is a memory or a chipset limitation, I am not aware of ... but I'm sure you guys won't complain with a FSB of 175MHz. Note that we had to use the slowest memory settings to achieve this kind of speed ... I am aware that this means that a lower speed settings with faster memory settings will outperform the 175MHz setting, but the goal was to see how high we could run the board, and that's what we did. As soon as faster DDR memory becomes available, I'll give it another go."

Anodized Shim Review
posted: September 14, 2001 @ 6:23 EDT by: ryan
MikHailTech takes a look at Tweakmonster's latest in non-conductive anodized shims. Good protection for $8.50. Here's a quote:
"Installation is pretty simple. The shim can go on any number of ways, but there's only one obvious position which doesn't cover any of the processor traces. The only issue I have with this new revision is the snugness of it. Because there's only one hole and three corners, it's a bit wobbly. Now this isn't really much of an issue since it doesn't move a whole lot, but another hole on the diagonally opposite corner would have solved the problem.

ECS K7S5A2 Review
posted: September 13, 2001 @ 6:13 EDT by: ryan
There sure are a lot of mainboard reviews today. PC Hardware reviewed the ECS K7S5A2, the second ECS board based on SiS735. Here's a quote:
"I was pleased to see that ECS included several memory timings templates. In the Advanced Chipset Features you can find two main settings: Advanced Dram Control 1 and Advanced Dram Control 2. Under these menus you can access several memory settings which are not documented, so I was just able to suppose what these settings really are. The four templates mentioned earlier are called Safe, Normal, Fast and Ultra. We will see in benchmarks if these affect performance."

Wind Tunnel IV Review
posted: September 13, 2001 @ 6:12 EDT by: ryan
Heat, it's the overclocker's worst enemy. Excessive amounts of heat, a result of overclocking your computer, can fry your fragile components and turn your computer into an elaborate door stop. That's why a good quality case that expels this heat is very important. The Tech Zone reviews such a case, the Wind Tunnel IV from CoolerGuys. Check out the full review here.

ECS K7S5A Mobo Review
posted: September 13, 2001 @ 6:11 EDT by: ryan
IANAG just finished of a review of the ECS K7S5A motherboard. Here's a quote:
"The 735 was developed from the ground up to be a single chip solution by gluing the North and South bridge together. The obvious upside to this is an extremely large amount of bandwidth between the two. While VIA's V-Link technology offers around 600 MB/s transfers, the integrated SiS solution is in the neighborhood of 1.2 GB/s. (Of course 600 MB/s is more than enough speed and the 1.2 GB/s is just overkill.) This is all thanks to SiS's Multi-threaded I/O Link technology which allows the chip to communicate with multiple devices much more effectively."

TweakTown is at it yet again. This time up is the Vantec CCK-6027D HSF Review.
"The Vantec CCK-6035D copper sink was a good unit, but many people want something that has just a bit less volume than the whining Delta 38CFM fan that goes with it. Enter the newest HSF to carry the Vantec name; the CCK-6027D. It was designed to be smaller, lighter and quieter than it's big brother. Come join TweakTown as we discover if they were successful, and more importantly, is it an effective cooling solution."

PlexWriter PX-W2410TA
posted: September 11, 2001 @ 6:31 EDT by: ryan
HardwareZone has posted up a review of the PlexWriter PX-W2410TA. Here's a quote:
"With the PX-W2410TA, Plextor has a drive that is currently the fastest CD-RW drive available today. Don't expect this drive to come cheap though. As with previous Plextor drives when first launched, this PlexWriter will cost more than S$400. This puts it as one of the most, if not the most, expensive 24x CD-RW recorder in the market. If you're willing to splash out the money, take heart that you will be owning what is currently being considered as the "Ferrari"-class CD-RW drive."

Rounded IDE Cables
posted: September 9, 2001 @ 8:37 EDT by: ryan
MikHailTech has a little bit on rounded cables. Here's a quote:
"The way rounded cables are made is no secret. You can do them by hand as well, but it's a lot more work and doesn't look nearly as cool. And since regular IDE and rounded cables cost almost the same nowadays, there's no reason NOT to get them. So how do they do it? Well, every one of the 80 wires is separated and is then twisted with the neighboring wire to make a pair. There are, quite logically, 40 pairs. These wires are then randomly bunched up into a cylinder and encased in a flexible plastic tube. Near the tips of the cables are movable covers to ensure that you don't rip any exposed wires.

Generic Micron RAM?
posted: September 8, 2001 @ 2:58 EDT by: ryan
8Balls Hardware has posted up a review of generic 256MB pc133 ECC SDRAM memory module, supposedly from Micron.
"Many people take their system's RAM for granted. However, they don't realise that their choice of RAM affects their system's performance and stability. Not all RAM modules are created equal. Today, we take a look at a generic 256MB PC133 SDRAM with ECC (Error Correction Coding) memory module, supposedly Micron branded. SDRAM of this make and supposed brand can be found aplenty right now, which would normally be regarded with a more critical eye, but since it IS ECC SDRAM, its something which isn't that openly available at the moment."
