Speeze Copper HSF Review

posted: October 5, 2001 @ 6:05 EDT by: ryan

NeoSeeker has posted their review of the new socket 370/A copper HSF from Speeze. Here's a piece:

"Games and multi-tasking can really turn up the heat on your CPU. If you suffer from a smoking hot core you might what to try Speeze's new cooling solution. Speeze's new product 5E055B1H3R, named the "Copper Rock", is supposedly the smaller brother of the "Big Rock". It would nice to see how the "Copper Rock" compares to its Big Brother."

Crucial 256mb DDR

posted: October 4, 2001 @ 7:39 EDT by: ryan

MikHailTech has posted their review of Crucial's 256mb DDR RAM stick. Here's a quote:

"The stick itself bears the general characteristics of most units made with Micron chips. It's a 256mb part, PC2100, CL2.5, unbuffered, non-parity, 2.5v, arranged in a 32meg x 64 array. Also, it's the usual 184-pin DIMM with a 64-bit data path. There's no ECC and it's not registered, so don't expect to use more than three of these sticks in a motherboard that has 4 slots (like the Abit KG7-R). Unlike a lot of manufacturers, Crucial memory is made from a 6-layer PCB as opposed to the 4-layer build of the competition. Speaking of competition, I decided to pit it up against another 256mb part I got. I'm referring to the previously reviewed Micron DDR stick."

Thermalright CB-6L Heatsink

posted: October 3, 2001 @ 6:30 EDT by: ryan

PCStats has posted up a review of the Thermalright CB-6L Heatsink:

"Given the unique technology of the CB-6L we were a bit disappointed to see in come in so far behind the other coolers. In retrospect this shouldn't be much of a surprise really. The other reference coolers all use higher-power fans to improve the sheer volume of air moving throughout their fins, and the CB-6L can't keep up. In the end, this heatsink is relegated to the OEM class pile, and while it may be perfectly fine for your average sub 1Ghz system, there are better choices out there to consider."

Iwill KK266plus-R Review

posted: October 2, 2001 @ 6:21 EDT by: ryan

Overclockers Online has posted a review of the IWill, the KK266plus-R. The board has onboard RAID, superb 6 channel onboard sound, overclocking and tweaking options, and much more. Snip:

"To check out what our KK266plus-R was capable of, we decided to test it by using the fastest AMD CPU currently available (the Athlon 1.4GHz) and some fast OCZ Performance Max SDRAM (pretested stable @ 175MHz CAS3) to be sure the memory doesn't act as a bottleneck. After some serious experimenting, I found out that the KK266plus-R is capable of running my Athlon CPU and the memory @ 161MHz CAS3 and @ 153MHz CAS2. That's quite an achievement, don't you think??"

"There are many MP3 players out on the market to choose from. Generally these portable music players fall into two categories, high capacity harddrive-based storage and low capacity flash-based storage. The Archos Jukebox 3000 MP3 player definitely falls into the high capacity category. With 6.0 Gigs of space it will easily store anyone's MP3 collection, and a whole lot more."

Rounded ATA/100 Cables

posted: October 1, 2001 @ 6:59 EDT by: ryan

Klatoo has taken a look at the infamous rounded ATA100 IDE cables that everyone has come to know and love (yes you do). It's a brief article, basically to see if they provide any added airflow/cooling benefits, or if they are just for show:

"The big question on my mind was "Are they just another pretty face?" I have been using "home grown" rounded cables for a while, and although I had never done a comparison with flat cables, common sense says "round is better," the smother more aerodynamic edges don't disrupt the case air circulation quite so bad."

MSI MX400 Review

posted: October 1, 2001 @ 6:58 EDT by: ryan

VIAHardware.com has posted a review of the MSI MX400 Pro-VT32S Video Card. Here's a quote:

"The MS-8833 includes all the features of the MX400 chip, and also includes Video-In and Video-Out (TV) support, as well as DVD software and video editing software (and the 183MHz memory clock of course). You might think that with the extra software you will be paying more for this card than others. You would be right, but the difference isn't as plain as price. The MS-8833 runs ~$80-85, with other MX400 based video cards costing ~$5-15 less. The catch? Most other MX400 based cards don't have the TV-Out at all, and certainly won't let you edit movies."

OCZ Dominator Review

posted: October 1, 2001 @ 6:57 EDT by: ryan

OCZ Dominator Microfin Heatsink review:

"The microfin technology combined with the 38mm focused flow fan are a powerful combination and the performance factor is hard to ignore. The clip works well, and is easy to engage without the need for tools which is always nice to see. I think the noise produced by the fan will limit the in-house applications of this combo to the die-hard, or acoustically insulated cases. Still it is one nicely built cooler, and with that big fan and grill up top kind of looks deadly powerful, which it is."

Mountain Heatsink Review

posted: September 29, 2001 @ 10:07 EDT by: ryan

Akasa Silver Mountain Heatsink Review:

"As shiny as the silver coating is on the Akasa heatsink, it really won't influence thermal results by any significant degree however. What the silver coating will do is prevent the underlying copper from oxidizing. Provided the silver coating is thick enough, it may even fill in some small gaps between the 18 sets of mechanically joined fins to the 6mm thick base plate."

Samsung SW-216 CDRW

posted: September 28, 2001 @ 5:56 EDT by: ryan

IANAG has posted up a review of the SW-216 Samsung's latest CD-RW. It is one of the cheapest 16x burners around. It comes with AOpen's new Just Link technology which is similar but supperior to BURN Proof.

"While you may have a 52x CD-ROM, the rating of 52X is a maximum rating, and on the inside tracks of the CD where the CD-ROM starts reading from, you are only going to get about 16x at the most. CD Recorders speeds are based on a CLV rating not a CAV rating like the most CD-ROMs past 8x, which means they burn at the same speed throughout the CD. So your 24x burner will actually start burning at 24x while your 52X CD-ROM is only starting to read at 16X, which will cause a buffer underrun error, but more likely your 24x burner has BURN Proof or Just Link enabled and your burner temporarily stops and waits for the CD-ROM to catch up and then resumes the burn, slowing the overall process."

posted: September 27, 2001 @ 2:29 EDT by: ryan

FrostyTech has posted up a review of the Vantec CCK-6027D copper heatsink:

"The question is, how will the shorter CCK-6027D compete against the larger CCK-6035D? Which one should you be thinking about getting? One of these two heatsinks outperforms the other, and it isn't the heatsink you think it is. That's right, where size doesn't matter, fin density does, and this copper cooler from Vantec has got a few tricks up its' sleeves that surprised even us."

DTI1 2015XLS 15 LCD

posted: September 26, 2001 @ 6:06 EDT by: ryan

Overclocked Cafe has finished their review of DTI's 2015XLS 15" monitor. It's a flat panel LCD, that provides a "3D experience", well the illusion of 3D, with the ability to toggle between 2D and 3D.

"Before we look at whether or not this thing really works, let's take a look at how it works it's magic. Basically, it takes advantage of how our own eyes and brain perceive images by essentially displaying two 512x768 images stretched across the screen. The left image appears on odd columns where the right image appears on even columns. Both images are shown simultaneously using an 'illumination plate' behind the LCD panel. DTI uses this to perform what they call 'parallax illumination'. Your brain takes the two images and combines them to form an apparent 3D image. Think about the 'Red/Blue glasses' type of 3D and how it works. A slightly different image is seen by the left and right eyes, creating an illusion of depth when the images are combined in our brains."
